Summer Period Bill Decrease

PLYMOUTH, NH – Summer period electric bills are going down for members of New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC).

Effective with bills rendered on or after May 1, 2018, the Co-op Power portion of members’ bills (the cost of actual energy) is decreasing by 18%. That drop is being offset somewhat by a summer period increase in the Regional Access Charge rate of 6%. The result for the typical residential member using 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month is an overall bill decrease of 7%, or $7.46 per month. The typical residential member using 1,000 kWh per month will see a total bill decrease of 8%, or $14.91 per month.

The Co-op Power rate decrease is as a result of forecasted lower energy prices in the summer period.  The Regional Access Charge rate increase is as a result of higher regional transmission costs that NHEC incurs to have power delivered to its distribution system that serves 84,000 homes and businesses in 115 New Hampshire communities.

The summer rate reductions continue an annual pattern of fluctuations that have seen the cost of power increase during the winter months and decrease in summer months. Driving these price swings are seasonal variations in the regional wholesale price of natural gas, which is used to generate approximately half of the electricity produced in New England.

Excluding the monthly Member Service Charge of $29.32, the per kWh charge for residential members is now $0.1486, which is a 1.8% increase over May 2017. A complete listing of rates is available here.

NHEC Foundation Mobile Food Pantry Helps Hundreds in Colebrook

COLEBROOK, N.H. – The New Hampshire Electric Co-op (NHEC) Foundation partnered with the NH Food Bank on February 24 to distribute over 17,000 pounds of food to nearly 600 Colebrook area residents. The food was distributed via a mobile food pantry held at the Colebrook Elementary School.

The NH Electric Co-op Foundation provided a $5,000 grant for the seventh year in a row to make the mobile food pantry possible.  Volunteers from both sponsoring organizations, along with help from the Helping Hands food pantry and many local volunteers, were on site to help unload and distribute the food to those in need.

The Board of Trustees at the NH Electric Co-op Foundation wishes to extend a very big thank you to all of the volunteers who made this event so successful.

“It really was a collaborative effort to be able to serve so many,” said NHEC Foundation Executive Director Sara Thielbar. “By distributing over 17,000 pounds of food we know we were able to provide close to 14,500 meals to Colebrook area residents in just one day!”

The NHEC Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is funded by the generosity of NHEC members who round up their monthly electric bills to the next dollar with the proceeds benefiting the Foundation.  Since being founded in late 2005, the Foundation has donated more than $3 million to support local charitable organizations and programs that improve the quality of life in New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Food Bank, a program of Catholic Charities New Hampshire, has been working to relieve hunger in the Granite State since 1984. The NH Food Bank is the only food bank in the state, and its registered hunger relief agencies rely on the food bank for approximately 40 percent of the food they distribute each year. For more information on upcoming mobile pantry distributions, those in need can visit www.nhfoodbank.org or contact the NH Food Bank agency relations department at (603) 669-9725.
