How It Works

The Freedom of Choice

Under Electric Choice, you have the freedom to choose your competitive energy supplier. This is the company that will sell you electricity, should you choose not to buy it from the Co-op. You can choose your energy supplier based on price, service options, environmental considerations, or any other factors that are important to you.

The New Hampshire Electric Cooperative will be referred to as your electric distribution company and will continue to deliver the electricity to your home or business, just as it does today. You will continue to be a member of the Co-op and the Co-op will still distribute electricity over the same poles and wires used today, regardless of which energy supplier you choose to buy your electricity from. If the lights go out, call the Co-op as always.

Making A Choice

As you learn more about the different energy suppliers and options available, you will have a number of choices. You can choose your energy supplier based on things that are important to you, such as lowest price or the environmental impact of different energy sources (i.e. coal, nuclear, wind, hydro), or join a buying group or cooperative that makes the purchasing decisions for you. After you have made your choice, the switch is easy. All you have to do is notify the new energy supplier. Don't call the Co-op; we cannot make the switch for you.

If you choose not to choose an energy supplier, your lights will not go out. You will continue get electric energy through Co-op Power provided by the New Hampshire Electric Co-op for as long as you want.

Consumer Protection

Whatever you choose, you will continue to receive dependable electric energy. All electric distribution companies and energy suppliers must continue to follow rules and regulations that protect consumers. The PUC will continue to monitor electric distribution companies and energy suppliers to ensure that New Hampshire consumers receive safe, reliable service.
